How To Make Sure Your AC Is in Tiptop Shape

Posted On: March 26, 2014

Utah is known for being on the warm side, but lately, this has been more true than usual. The winters and early springs in the state can be downright cold, especially in mountainous, northerly Ogden, but you wouldn’t know it from the bevy of 50s and 60s the area has been seeing of late. And if this is any indication, we’re in for one heck of a hot summer.

Before you know it, it will be time to turn on the AC, so it’s a good idea to check now to see if everything is working properly. You’ll want to make sure your unit is revved up and ready to face the onslaught of the summer months. Here are some important tips that will keep your AC unit working optimally when things heat up:

  • Close the blinds or shades during those sunny, summery days – Throughout the hot months, the blazing sun is beating down on your home all day long. To ensure that your AC unit isn’t working harder than it needs to, you should counterbalance by keeping your home as naturally cool as possible. A simple way to do this is to close your blinds, shades or curtains during the day, and make sure that there are no leaks letting the cool air out.

  • Shut room doors – You can reduce the space that the AC has to cool by shutting doors within the house. By lessening the space the cool air has to circulate, you are saving energy and money. You’ll also want to make sure to turn the unit off when leaving your home.
  • Check your air filters – The filters will be on the outside of most units, where they are prone to pick up all sorts of debris and dust. This makes it harder for the cold air to flow through your home and can even release a nasty smell. In order to avoid this problem, check and change the filters regularly or have us do it for you (included in your tune-up)!
